Bonsai By The Sea.
The Pavilion, Esplanade, Exmouth. EX8 2AZ.
Back in 2002, Exeter Bonsai Society first moved our annual show out of a small church hall into the larger space provided by The Pavilion on Exmouth seafront. The first time we used the hall our displays looked a little lost, and we decided it would be a good idea to invite one or two other societies to come and join us. Little did we know that 20 years on this show would become a bit of a fixture on the bonsai landscape in the South West. After the problems of the last two years where every show got cancelled or postponed, it was with a bit of trepidation that we decided to go ahead and restart the trend. This may well not have occurred without the sound advice and encouragement of good bonsai friends, for which we are truly thankful. A lot of societies have found their numbers seriously depleted by the pandemic, and we are no different. It was with huge sighs of relief, and great pleasure, that we saw a 50% increase in the number of people coming in to see all the variety there was on display. With ten societies from far and wide, and a handful of traders, the public were treated to a wealth of information, inspiration and encouragement. With any luck our membership will expand a bit!
Our sincere thanks go to both Chris Thomas and Daniel Butler for their demonstrations which both had a lot of eager viewers, and to Chris Thomas for his walkabout where he discusses the displays in general and each of the trees in each display. A special thank you must also go to two of our newest members Mark and Sean who got stuck in and helped out with both setting up, and taking money on the door, without a second thought. I hope we haven’t put them off for good! Being so shorthanded, the day would have been very difficult without them. On the strength of this success, we have booked up the hall for the 2nd Sunday in June for the foreseeable future…the next one is 11th June 2023. We hope to see you all there.
