Scottish Bonsai Association National Exhibition
Walker Hall, Municipal Buildings, South Beach, Troon, Scotland. KA10 6EF.
Sunday 21st May was a big day for bonsai in Scotland with the Scottish Bonsai Association holding its annual National Exhibition in Troon, again hosted by the Ayrshire Bonsai Group. Despite several months of planning the day is always fraught as we have to set up everything on the day immediately prior to opening at 11.00. However, the team did a great job and managed to open on time – just.
We have been working hard to increase the exposure of the hobby through the show and this year was the biggest and best yet with five member clubs displaying, plus an Open Section for all comers, a selection of trees for the Scottish National Collection and a novices section for new and junior hobbyists. All in all there were over 200 trees on display and we were delighted this year to include trees from some of our old friends in the north of England.
A major advertising campaign on social media also bore fruit resulting in the highest public attendance yet at any National Exhibition. Although votes were held and recognition plaques awarded the aim of the show is to promote the hobby with the general public and also to provide an event where all those closet bonsaists out there, who are not part of any club structure, have the opportunity to get involved. On that basis it was a great success – and this year we didn’t lose money – a bonus!
What you see in the photos is just a small fraction of those taken on the day and we were particularly delighted and appreciative of the fact that Scott Winnard videoed the event for us which will be a really helpful aid to our promotional efforts. If you want to see more take a look at the SBA’s Facebook page.
Thanks to one and all who organised, helped, exhibited, travelled and traded at the show – it all made for a great day!
Cheers
