A Grandmother and Granddaughter stand in awe of the Bonsai on display.
This year saw the new addition of and investment in some Japanese-inspired backdrops which were used to decorate and ‘frame’ the entrance to the Exhibition Hall.
They were also used, as seen here by the Redditch Bonsai Society (RBS) Display, to compliment the Master Class section.
This enhanced everything from overall shape and form, to the general structure and silhouette of the Bonsai trees. Basically make them ‘stand out – from the crowd’.
The weather was reasonably nice, although not as warm as we might have wished for June, but of the many visitors to the Gardens at least 400 came to look at the great selection of trees on display. About three quarters of them voted for their favourite tree of the show, which was won by Robert Walton, so congratulations to him.
Redditch Bonsai Society (RBS) put on a splendid display by the main entrance to the exhibition hall.
There were two traders in attendance, David Cheshire Nurseries with a great selection of trees and various bonsai sundries, and Funky Fish Ceramics who brought a very varied selection of highly individual hand-made pots.
There were two talks arranged by members, one on the benefits of joining a society and one on the history of bonsai, and both of which were well received.

Chair of both, Midland Bonsai Society (MBS) and Redditch Bonsai Society (RBS), Judith Davison discusses; ‘A Short History of Bonsai’.
Bonsai Artist and RHS Gold Medal Winner, David Cheshire of David Cheshire Bonsai and Nurseries presents; ‘Basic Bonsai – Join A Society’.
Our thanks go to all the members of both societies who took the time to bring their trees and help set up and steward the show and also to the staff of the Gardens who went out of their way to help to make it a success.
We must also thank Jon Moult for coming to judge the competition and our congratulations go to James Thornton who won ‘Supreme Tree’ of the show, ‘Best Tree/Pot combination’, ‘Most Awards of Merit’ and 5 other awards, so well-done James.

Robert Walton’s display took the public’s imagination with his unique and innovative presentation.
Illustrating the sheer size and scale of this Chestnut, you can begin to imagine just how big and mighty the ‘Mother’ might be!
The annual tombola made a healthy profit towards club funds. Good work, Teanah and her crew.
