Surrey Heath Bonsai Show
Chobham Village Hall, Station Road, Chobham, Surrey. GU24 8AQ.
On Sunday 14th July Surrey Heath Bonsai Society held its annual show at Chobham Village Hall, Chobham in Surrey.
Thankfully it was a fine day with 26 members arriving from 7.15 onwards to help set up 33 tables along with the dividing screens and black cloths. Tables were also set up outside where our club sales area was with members bringing an array of trees, pots and books to sell.
A total of 69 trees were on display ranging from individual trees to Shohin displays and a wonderful display of Accent plants from Mingchen. 156 visitors attended throughout the day and all were given a voting form and asked to vote for their 3 favourite trees.
Interaction with the public was foremost with some having never seen bonsai before but came away totally fascinated.
Many showed a more than keen interest in learning more about bonsai so it is hoped that new members will be forthcoming.
The interesting thing about the voting was that of the 69 trees on display 37 different trees were voted by the visitors as their favourite tree which highlights the totally diverse and subjective views of the public when viewing an art form.
The visiting public were also asked about how they knew about the show with most replying that it was either the street signs put out a week earlier or the signs put outside the hall on the day of the show to attract passing motorists.
Once again the public were not charged an entrance fee however most parted with monies either at the sales tables or at our Tea, Coffee, Cake and Biscuit kitchen resulting in a very welcome £365 profit for the club funds.
We were most pleased to have Collette Harrison as our sole trader in the hall. She appeared to have a very successful day with her sales and both she and her husband always enjoy visiting us.
On counting up the voting forms John was in 5th place with 42 points for his Beech, 4th place went to Alex with 64 points for her Maple, John took 3rd place with 93 points for his root over rock Cotoneaster, and Robert took both 1st and second spot with 108 points for his wonderful stump of a Privet and 110 points for his fabulous Obtusa Nana. Robert will receive the “Best in Show” shield for 2024 at our next meeting on 7th August.
All in all a most successful day for all attending.
