Wirral Bonsai Main Show
Gordale Garden Centre, High Road, Burton, South Wirral. CH64 8TF.
The Wirral Bonsai Show was held over the three day August Bank Holiday at Gordale Garden Centre on the Wirral. 40+ trees were on display for the general public to enjoy, with a great turn out from the public over the whole weekend.
We were treated to a great variety of trees, classed by the club as conifer and deciduous, all to an amazing standard plus a section of “trees in progress” although it wasn’t easy to see where the distinction was in the show. Once the judging was completed we had an almost clean sweep of the main awards by Rod McFarlane
This year we trialled a new judging process devised by Dave Yarrington covering all aspects of the tree - trunk, branches, foliage, nebari, condition, aesthetics and display with points allocated against each aspect. The tree with the highest points won the conifer and deciduous classes. The sheet also included feedback to the owner of the bonsai so that they could see how to improve their bonsai compared with other trees in the show. It was very popular with the general public who could then read the sheets by each tree and get a better understanding of the tree they were looking at. I’m sure other clubs will be very welcome to trial the forms to see if they are also useful for their club shows.
We also had a trade stand from David Cheshire Bonsai who brought a great selection of trees and tools, enabling the public to get started with a bonsai of their own once they had wandered around the displays. He was a really great addition to our club show.
We also had a very special tribute, to a great man and talented table maker - Doug Mudd - who was a valued friend and member of the society and who passed away late last year. A display was set up showing a selection of his amazing smaller tables. You may have left us Doug, but we will never forget you for your positive contributions to our club. Sleep well our treasured friend.
