Dragon Bonsai Club Auction
On Sunday 3rd September, we held our annual club action at the resource centre in Glanamman.
The weather was fantastic – the forecast just a few days before was for rain. However, by the Saturday morning the ( very ) late summer heatwave was with us.
It was great to see support from other clubs, with people travelling from far & wide. We very much appreciate the time & effort you guys made to be with us on the day – thank you .
Just under 400 items went under the hammer from 11.oo am to around 4.30pm, with a break for lunch.
Breakfast was served to those that stayed overnight on the Saturday – and for the early arrivals from our friends in North Wales – and from other clubs further south.
Four of our club members had made some amazing cakes, which were sold out very quickly – and there was a supply of hot and cold drinks all day, plus bacon rolls during the morning & lunch break.
The auction got off to a flying start with Chris running the show at 11.oo am, with around 30 bidders. The range of material was incredible, from show ready Junipers to collections of Yamadori, books, beautiful hand made stands, bonsai tools and other kit.
We also had over 100 pots and smaller Mame / Shohin pot collections on offer – many were hand made, and these all attracted huge interest from the bidders.
We had two guest Auctioneers – Malcom, and Tony – who did a sterling job, and moved on thousands of pounds worth within 45 minutes.
The auctions are an opportunity for anyone to buy starter material, and we had over 100 separate items that were perfect to bring on and develop.
Bidding was intense for some of the trees – as you can imagine when you see the quality that we had on offer.
Every year we think that the last one was the best – and again this year we think the same thing !
We can’t run these without the support of people attending – and it goes without saying – the fantastic team effort from Dragon Bonsai.
It’s not an easy task – and the work starts well before the Sunday, with preparations – like collecting trees from the members, getting the hall & kitchen ready, cake making, and logging around 400 separate items on to a superb database system developed by Andy, that provides all bidders with a print out of their sales, purchases and the balance.
I think we had everyone paid out within an hour of the last item going under the hammer.
We had a brilliant team back stage that sorted everyone’s purchases out – and helped carry them to the fleet of cars and vans.
The team running the kitchen – huge thanks to you for your work before – during and after the event. The clean up was awesome.
We closed the doors just after 6.30pm, and headed home with yet more trees – and memories of another successful club auction .
See you at the next one,
Simon.
