37th Arco Bonsai
Centra Congress Casino Municipale, Arco Trenttino, Italy.
We travelled to Italy at the start of May for the Arco Bonsai weekend with great friend Bill and Catherine Baker. We stayed in our favourite hotel the Villa Nicolli in Riva Del Garda on the northern shore of Lake Garda. Having been to the show before, back in 2018 when the UK had a representative in the New talent contest and the EBA had its congress there, we had a good idea what was in store.
The show is held over 3 days and takes in the middle of the town, there are many traders (nearly 80) from several countries selling everything Bonsai. The Yamadori in particular were surprisingly very affordable and good material. We did succumb to spending a reasonable amount as you do (not on plant material) even caught up with a couple of member potters from the EBPC.
There were demonstrations in several areas, the Casino, town hall and a huge sports hall was used for the club/instructors demo’s. These consisted on the Saturday of 21 invited individual instructors from the various schools in Italy and on Sunday 20 Bonsai clubs, in both cases working on their own material, each being given 7 hrs to complete their tree.
Individual competition was won by Gaetano Settembrini from the Bonsai Do Groane school in Maderno, Veneto, the club/school competition was won by Bonsai Passion Foligno, who had travelled from Umbria (some 450 miles away).
Also present to showcase their talents were Bonsai professional Iura Takashi with his helper Yuuki Kobayashi working on a Juniper and a Scots pine, we by chance met them on the Friday in Riva whilst we were watching the world go by sipping a beer, he is no relation to the infamous master Kobayashi. Before and after pics shown.
There were several great events taking place over the weekend, brush painting, talk on Suiseki, Samari regalia and some superb scrolls. Plenty to keep us occupied over the 2 days.
There were a good selection of trees and stones on display, 3 of which we had highlighted, we even got the owner of a good Chinese Juniper to have his picture taken with his tree, only to find out recently that he had won one of the awards. Both the others had also won awards. See pics.
We would whole heartedly recommend the show and area for its hospitality and beauty, included are a selection of pictures from the many we took. They are trying to get the EBA to be involved again possibly next year, so perhaps the UK could submit an entry, would’nt that be a first! Definitely going to keep an eye on their website, www.arcobonsai.com and looking forward to our next trip.
Bestest Tony and Penny McKenzie.
