Southend Bonsai Society Spring Show
Ashingdon Memorial Hall, Ashingdon Road, Rochford, Essex. SS4 3HF.
Southend Bonsai Society hosted their 2024 Spring Show, on Sunday 17th March, at Ashingdon Memorial and Community Hall.
The main display consisted of 19 individual specimen trees, we also had a selection of starter and part styled trees, several Shohin displays, and a small display of wire bonsai, and imitation trees and accessories. The quality of the trees continues to improve at each show, which is testament to the members dedication to the art of bonsai and the care and attention to detail in the displays.
We also had a small display in tribute to two of our members; Graham Cooke who sadly passed away in December and Dave Carlile who sadly passed away in February.
Paul Finch and I judged the show, and two trophies were awarded; Best Evergreen Tree was presented to Danielle Hughes for her Juniper Itoigawa. and Best Deciduous Tree was presented to Barry Gatt, for his, Japanese Larch. Congratulations to Danielle and Barry.
In addition to the two main awards above, members of the public visiting the show were asked to vote for their favourite tree, and the ‘Past Members Memorial Trophy’, was also presented, to Danielle Hughes, for her Juniper Itoigawa. Huge congratulations to Danielle for winning the ‘Double’.
This year for the first time we invited traders to attend the show and we were pleased to welcome, Dawn from DEI ceramics, Claire who was selling a selection of her own collection of trees, and Harry from Everysprout. I think they all had a reasonably successful day and we hope to welcome them back to future shows / events.
The committee would like to say a very special thank you to the following people, without whom the show would not be possible.:
All the members who helped with the setup and provided their trees for the displays, assisted the members of the public with any questions they might have throughout the day and helped to break down the displays and clear the hall at the end of the day.
Linda and Dave of Ato Saki Bonsai for providing a selection of trees, pots, and tools for sale and for running the club sales table.
All members who kindly baked and prepared the sweet and savoury selection of snacks and especially Norma, Linda and Danielle for running the refreshments counter.
Pam for providing the tombola prizes and for managing the ticket sales.
The attendance was not as high as expected, despite all the efforts of Mark and the other members when publicising the event through; social media, show flyers, UKBA event listing, and by word of mouth at other events leading up to our show. We’re hoping to recover the upward trend in attendance at our next and subsequent show(s), please put the following dates in your diaries:
September 1st, when the club will be putting on a display at the East Anglia show in Kesgrave.
October 13th, when the club will be putting on a display at the Heathrow Show, in Bracknell
November 17th, when we will be holding our Autumn show in Ashingdon Memorial and Community Hall.
Please see below a selection Photos / videos from the show.
