Royal Lancashire Agricultural Show
Salesbury Hall Estate, Salesbury Hall Road, Ribchester, Preston. PR3 3XU.
This weekend members attended the Royal Lancashire show.
Over the 3 days members who were in attendance on varying days were Gavin, Ray C, John D, John L, Ess, Mike Y, John R, Jenny, Kim, Peter and Stan.
Our display consisted of over 70 individual trees, with various types, styles, and including accent plants.
The set up was on the Thursday afternoon, so everything was ready for the opening day and the judging, which was done by John Hanby on the Friday morning.
The winner of the Best in Show was John Davies with his Cork Elm, he also won Best Deciduous and Best Group. Ess won Best Coniferous and Gavin won both Best Mame and Best Shohin. Among the Merit certificates awarded were John L for a group planting, both Kim and Peter for deciduous trees, John D for his larch and Gavin for 2 of his trees, a Cotoneaster Shohin and a Hawthorn Mame.
Each of the days had a demonstration of transforming a ‘normal’ tree into a bonsai, both Gavin and Ray were the demonstrators. There were plenty of very interested members of the public throughout the three days. Which also included the local Member of Parliament who was delighted over the trees, in fact purchasing 3 herself from extra trees brought in for sale by members.
Unfortunately the 3 days were inundated with rain, it never stopping especially during Saturday and Sunday. Due to this the event was closed early at 3 o’clock on Sunday afternoon. The ground was sodden and it took everyone some time to leave the site.
The next show will be the Baxender Allotment show on 2nd September.
