22Oct23 Sun
Southend Bonsai Society Winter Show
Ashingdon Memorial Hall, Ashingdon Road, Rochford, Essex. SS4 3HF.
All the members pulled together to put on a main display of 15 large specimen trees and a smaller, separate display of Shohin and TIT’s (Trees in Training!).
Considering this is a local club show without the benefit of being in an RHS or similar County / Country Show setting. The show was reasonably well attended.
There were several club members selling trees, pots, tools etc. and we were very happy to be able to welcome Harry Ueda from ‘Everysprout’ to promote his HB101 plant food.
Mark and Ming very kindly agreed to do the judging for best Evergreen and Best Deciduous trees in show, and there was a unique ‘Past Members’ memorial trophy for the best tree as voted for by the public.
Congratulations go to:
Barry Gatt who won best Evergreen tree for his Yew (Taxus Baccata).
Kevin Knight who won best Deciduous tree for his Korean Hornbeam (Carpinus Coreana).
And Danielle Hunt who won the Public Vote for her Juniper (Juniperus Itoigawa).
Special thanks must go to Mark and Ming for attending the show and assisting with the judging
And all the members who were up at the crack of dawn to assist with the setup, and throughout the day preparing refreshments, running the Tombola, and engaging with the visitors to answer their questions.
We identified 5 potential new members. And the revenue from entry fees, refreshment sales, trade sales and Tombola, more than covered our costs. So all in all a very successful day.
Looking forward to welcoming you all to our spring show scheduled for April 21st 2024.
Paul Schofield.
