Doncaster Bonsai Experience
Markham Grange Nursery, Longlands Lane, Brodsworth, Doncaster, South Yorkshire. DN5 7XB.
This eagerly awaited event has grown and grown over some 15 years to become the premier bonsai event in the North of England. Being recently rebranded as the Doncaster Bonsai Experience the event happens twice a year, the February event hosts a Spring Show and the September event hosts a Shohin Show.
The organising team of Daryl Harris, Karen and John Skill and Dave Newman have worked tirelessly over the years to make these events what they have become, not just a great place to buy and sell bonsai related items, but as a place where the whole bonsai community can come together in a friendly atmosphere. Along the way, both events have hosted there respective tree exhibitions which have grown in size every time they are held with the quality reaching new heights all the time. All the events have always been free entry to the visitors, with a large auction raising substantial monies for national charities.
It's always the dream of any event organiser, that their event should become successful and generally we gauge the success by the numbers of people attending. Well, this event broke all expectations, the entry queue to get in at 0900.hrs was right across the car park, the organising team must have been so proud with what they had achieved, from humble beginnings to a very strong buzzing event. The Nursery at Markham Grange have always been very supportive over many year, the car park had even been expanded since the last event was held, but with the increased popularity of the event, the car park still proved inadequate for the size of the event. Unfortunately on Monday, two members of the organising team met up with the nursery management and had to announce that there would be no future events at Markham Grange, the event had simply out grown the location. For all of us that attended the Sunday event, this news on the Monday seemed unbelievable, we can only hope following the end of the Doncaster Bonsai Experience, that a new venue in the north of England, a new team and a new name will emerge in the future.
