12th Jan 2020 Bonsai Winter Image
Bonsai in Scotland kicked off 2020 with the annual Winter Image Event hosted by the Ayrshire Bonsai Group in Alloway Village Hall on Sunday 12th January.
This is a very informal event where around 50 enthusiasts from across Scotland and the North of England gathered to display and discuss trees in their winter image – at a time when their underlying structure and features are plainly visible and the impact of all that work of growing and positioning branches can be appreciated ! There are no rules, no fancy backdrops and no sophisticated layouts – just the trees. In recent years, a feature of the event has been a tree critique session led last year by Robert Porch and Ian Baillie and this year by Robert Porch flying solo. Attendees really appreciate Robert’s insight and tips for improvement which often lead to much discussion !!
As the Ayrshire Group is fortunate in having two members who are also respected bonsai potters in their own right, this event is combined with a timely pot sale and this year, in addition, Robert Porch was invited along to add some of his extensive sales offering to those of Barry Somerville and Peter Kleboe. As a result several hundred pounds worth of pots changed hands and all purchasers went away happy.
Overall there were more than 70 trees and 200 pots were on view and, as if that wasn’t enough, a fantastic array of hot and cold food was provided to make the day go with a swing.
The Ayrshire Group would like to say thanks to all those who attended – especially our friends travelling up from Carlisle and from all-points Scotland. Thanks also to Robert Porch for his support and to all those members who contributed food for the buffet. We look forward to doing it all again next year.
If you are interested in exploring whether bonsai might be for you then why not come along to our next meeting. We meet in Alloway Hall on the second Sunday of every month between 13.30 and 16.30.
Alternatively why not drop in and see us at the National Exhibition of Bonsai which the Ayrshire Group is hosting on the 10th May at Troon Concert Hall. This is the biggest show in Scotland devoted solely to bonsai and, in addition, to the displays, will include traders, talks and refreshments. The show is open from 11.00 to 16.00.
